Diablo 2’s holiday event is underway, and it’s off to a very generous start

With Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred, Path of Exile 2 early access, and Last Epoch 1.0 all making big splashes this year, there really hasn’t been much cause to go back to the game that truly set the standard for ARPGs. Diablo 2 Resurrected is the definitive way to play the 2000 Blizzard RPG that, to this day, remains the biggest inspiration for the entire genre. There’s a new season on the go, but very little in the way of reasons to check-in. If you’ve been craving some old-school blasting, however, it’s well worth coming back for the 22 Nights of Terror, which are now underway and already off to a rather generous start.

Blizzard’s annual festive celebration, the 22 Nights of Terror, brings a range of special modifiers to Diablo 2 Resurrected, each lasting for just 24 hours. They’re a fun way to put a dramatic twist on one of the best RPGs of all time, with the changeover announced via the in-game message of the day at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm GMT / 8pm CET every day. There’s no hint exactly what will be next, and the modifiers have already changed from last year, so expect to unwrap a surprise each day.

In past years, we’ve seen lots of very fun interactions. Typically the most popular is the vendor discount day – while it might not sound that exciting, by dramatically dropping NPC prices, it becomes possible to keep generating gold to gamble for items as much as you want. There have also been days where Terror Zones – D2R’s answer to Diablo 4 Helltides – offered much more experience or jumped far more rapidly around the map, even making appearances in the Secret Cow Level.

For 2024, Blizzard has wasted no time in kicking things off with a bang. The first day of events offered a pretty spectacular +250% Magic Find boost, making it vastly easier to get your hands on some of the game’s best loot drops. It’s certainly far from a guarantee, but that’s a pretty significant bonus if you’ve been desperately grinding for a particular item.

The second offering is Extra Stuffing, doubling all hero hit points. While that’s a little less exciting, it might be the push you need to blast through some otherwise troublesome sections or tackle that boss who’s been proving a little too much of a heavy hitter. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of those really juicy boosts as the event rolls on – I’ll certainly make an attempt to jump in for the likes of movement speed or vendor price drops.

Diablo 2 Resurrected - The epoymous Lord of Terror, a giant, red demon.

2024 has been a very quiet year for Diablo 2. D2R Ladder Season 9 kicked off at the start of December, but with no new features, it was tough to justify making the time to go back. With the focus on Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred Expansion, that’s perhaps understandable, but it’s nice to have an excuse to return to the ARPG that still remains the poster child of the loot-grinding genre to this day. So if you’re taking time off for the holidays, consider cozying up to your PC and showing some skeletons the business end of your sword.

The 22 Nights of Terror run in Diablo 2 Resurrected through Saturday January 4, with the active modifier changing every day at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm GMT / 8pm CET. Simply log in and check the message of the day on the game’s main menu to see what’s currently active.
